Prior to this monologue, Orgon tells Cleante that his soul must be tainted because he questions Tartuffe's pious nature. In this monologue, Cleante tells Orgon that he is not an atheist just because he can see Tartuffe's corrupt nature. He then points out that Orgon makes no distinction between people who are good and people who are merely pretending to be good.
