In this monologue, Elmire is speaking to her husband, Orgon. She has instructed Orgon to hide under the table so that he may see that Tartuffe has been trying to seduce her. Here, she tells Orgon that she will appear to be falling for Tartuffe's seduction, but only to prove to Orgon that Tartuffe is not the man Orgon believes him to be. She tells Orgon that once he is convinced of Tartfuffe's nature, it is up to him to stop the scene.
