AuthorName: Jean-Baptiste Moliere
Prior to this monologue, Elmire has hidden her husband under the table in order to prove to him that Tartuffe, the man Orgon believes to be his most trusted spiritual adviser, is in fact a con-artist who has been trying to seduce Elmire. In this monologue, Elmire is speaking to Tartuffe. She tells him how upset she was when Damis tried to out Tartuffe to Orgon and how she lusts after Tartuffe in return. In trying to convince Tartuffe of her feelings for him, she explains that a woman must first deny a man that she loves and that she would not have tried to stop the marriage between he and Mariane if she did not want Tartuffe for herself.
