Prior to this monologue, Mariane was supposed to marry Valere, the man she loves. Her father, Orgon, decided that instead, she will marry Tartuffe, the man Orgon deems as his most trusted spiritual adviser, but in reality, is a con-artist. In this monologue, Mariane is speaking to Orgon, begging him to release her from this engagement to Tartuffe. She pleads with Orgon to let her enter a convent, rather than marry Tartuffe.
